Hearing the words root canal might make you feel uneasy, but the reality is far less scary than the myths.
Root canal treatment is a safe, effective, and painless way to save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed.
A root canal is needed when the soft tissue inside the tooth becomes infected or inflamed.
This can happen due to:
Decay: A cavity that has reached the nerve inside the tooth
Damage: A chipped or broken tooth that allows bacteria to enter
Previous dental work: Repeated procedures on a tooth can cause irritation
Trauma: A sudden injury that affects the nerve, even if there’s no visible damage
Without treatment, the infection can spread, leading to pain, swelling, and even an abscess.
A root canal removes the infection, relieves pain, and saves the tooth so extraction isn’t necessary.
After treatment, your tooth might feel a little sensitive for a few days, but this is temporary.
The area around the tooth may also feel slightly tender, especially if there was an infection before the procedure.
Any discomfort should gradually improve and can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
To ensure a smooth and successful recovery:
Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your final filling or crown is placed to prevent damage
Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing carefully, avoiding the treated area for the first 24 hours
Skip hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could disturb the temporary filling or irritate the tooth
Keep up with follow-up visits so we can check healing progress and complete the final restoration
Most people return to their normal routine within a day, but if you experience severe pain, swelling, or pressure that doesn’t improve, contact us right away.
Root canal treatment has a high success rate, but if an infection does return, re-treatment can be done.
In the past, a root-filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques, this does not usually happen. If there is any discolouration, there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance.
In most cases, saving your natural tooth is the best option. A missing tooth can lead to alignment issues, bone loss, and additional dental work. A root canal allows you to keep your tooth and avoid more extensive treatments.
Not always, but in many cases, a crown is recommended to protect the tooth from future fractures, especially if the tooth was badly damaged. Your dentist will advise the best option for you.
